Ireland's answer to the cosy English village must surely be Adare, where the Third Earl of Dunraven built a street with thatched cottages and hedges at the gates of his early Victorian Manor. History had already endowed the place with an exquisite backdrop to further please the eye - a Norman castle beside the River Maigue and the best collection of ruined mediaeval friaries in Ireland.
